The Founding “NABA Nine”

In December 1969, nine African-Americans financial leaders met in New York City to discuss the unique challenges and limited opportunities they faced in the accounting profession. In that year, there were only 136 African-American Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) out of a total of 100,000 in the United States. This group wanted to establish an organization to help address the concerns of Black professionals entering the accounting field and make a commitment to professional, and academic, excellence.

Today, NABA continues to create opportunities for the purpose of enlarging the pipeline of Black Business Leaders into every level of accounting, finance, business, and entrepreneurship.

Mission Statement

Chartered in 1978 by SEEK student James Lewis and SEEK counselor Patricia Johnson, NABA Baruch is one of the oldest and largest collegiate chapters at Baruch College.

Our mission is to engage, empower, educate, enhance, and elevate our members by providing a platform for skill development and amplifying their voices. We are dedicated to promoting academic and professional excellence while supporting and encouraging minority students pursuing careers in accounting, finance, or related fields.

Throughout the academic year, NABA Baruch hosts a variety of events, including networking opportunities, workshops, and guest speaker sessions. These events allow members to connect with industry professionals, stay informed on current trends, and cultivate the skills necessary for career success.

Membership is open to all minority Baruch College students interested in accounting, finance, or related fields. Members gain access to scholarships, career resources, and leadership opportunities.

NABA Baruch serves as a valuable resource for students of color striving to excel academically and professionally. It also fosters a sense of community, connecting members with like-minded individuals and industry experts who share their backgrounds and ambitions.

Forever and always, lifting as we climb through the 5 E’s:

Engage. Empower. Educate. Enhance. Elevate

Rebranding to NABA+

Introduced in Fall 2023 by then-president and current TD Securities Analyst, Arafath Radji, the “+” was added to our organization’s name to reflect NABA’s commitment to inclusivity.

This addition signifies how we cater to and aim to elevate all business majors, not just those in accounting.

Although we are the National Association of Black Accountants, our membership is not limited to African Americans or accountants.

We are dedicated to serving all students seeking business development, regardless of their classification, race, or major (i.e., “+”).

The majors of our executive board members that received full-time offers post-graduation were, but not limited to:

  • Accounting

  • Computer Informational Systems

  • Economics

  • Finance

  • Marketing
